In this edition of “The Executive Outlook,” we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Joe Perez, a CTO, best-selling author, Senior System Analyst, and Gartner Peer Community Ambassador of the year 2023. His innovative personality and life story are not just inspiring but also filled with inspiration and information. His unique approaches to business can guide you on your journey.

During the conversation, Joe shared more about himself by saying, “I am a senior systems analyst and team leader at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Also, fractionally I serve as Chief Technology Officer for a startup company called CogniMind and, on the side, I write articles and speak at conferences, and I have a wonderful time enjoying life and living it to its fullest.

The conversation became more exciting when Joe answered the questions, how did he start, how was his journey, and how is he here? Joe replied in his own words, “My days are anything but typical, all right. There’s a constant dance, if you will, between the analytical on one side and the creative on the other. One minute I might be diving into a dataset, identifying trends and patterns, and the next minute, brainstorming out-of-the-box strategies to propel us forward. I always try to remain curious about the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ of everything. Numbers have always held a certain magic for me—a way to explain the world around us.

As far as my journey is concerned, I was an educator for 10 years before transitioning to my current information technology career. Both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in education. The transition from educator to technologist was more natural than you might think. In the last few years of my teaching career, I took on increasingly technical jobs during the summers to supplement my income. These jobs aligned with the technology-based minor of my doctoral degree, which is also in education.

What started off being merely a way to help pay my bills became more than that. I started getting pretty good at it, often going beyond the call of duty in those temporary jobs to resolve issues, improve efficiency, and implement ideas that greatly benefited my clients. As the work became more complex, I leveraged my graduate education and honed my technical skills. I got so proficient that they had me running the school’s computer lab in my last year of teaching.

When the job offer came for me to become a computer consultant at NC State University, it was not only a major promotion but also a natural evolution in my career. It blended my two professional loves, education and technology. Over the next 25 years at NC State, I rose through the ranks—from computer training manager, to analyst programmer, to business intelligence specialist. I was responsible for designing educational training programs and educating key stakeholders about the multifaceted data we reported on, along with providing insights derived from that data.

Dr. Joe expressed his feelings by saying, “I enjoyed showing them just how satisfying that insight can be, especially when you get to present the data. I still do that to this day, particularly when it’s presented in a logical, truthful, and visually compelling manner”. My educational background in computers, theology, and education provided me with a unique perspective that allowed me to effectively bridge the gap between technical expertise and human understanding.

To spread light on his journey he said, “In the early stages of my career, I was heavily focused on the technical aspects of data analysis. I enjoyed the challenge of making sense of complex datasets and extracting meaningful insights. However, I soon realized that the real power of data lies not just in understanding it, but in effectively communicating its story. This realization led me to blend my analytical skills with strategic thinking and strong communication abilities, enabling me to bridge the gap between data and actionable insights.

This dovetailed nicely into my opportunities to speak at conferences—more than 100 of them in the last three years alone. I enjoy delivering keynotes and using my God-given talents for communication to make a positive impact on audiences, bring value to conferences, and generate high levels of energy in the room. I love doing it as much as I can.

Every day presents new challenges and opportunities. Whether I’m collaborating with cross-functional teams, aligning data strategies with business goals, or mentoring younger analysts to help them see the bigger picture, there’s always a sense of purpose. My faith and my commitment to making a positive impact drive me. On a personal note, I’m deeply involved in my church’s Spanish and military ministries, both of which keep me grounded and remind me of the broader implications of the things I do.

This is the way Joe effectively balances his professional responsibilities and personal passions like music, family, faith, and more to live a dynamic and fulfilling life. This perfect blend of the technical and the creative, both in his professional and personal life is both fascinating and engaging.

By sharing more secrets about the aspects of his job that excite him the most, Joe said, “Well, as you can tell, I get excited about many things. The most thrilling part of my job is the potential for transformation. Helping run a data warehouse and seeing raw data transformed into actionable insights that drive real change is exhilarating. There’s something profoundly satisfying about turning complex data into a clear narrative that guides decision-making. It’s about empowering organizations to make data-driven decisions that unlock possibilities they never knew existed.”

Moreover, there’s a sense of constant evolution in my field. The digital landscape is ever-changing. Staying ahead of the curve and exploring new tools and strategies—those are the things that keep everything incredibly stimulating for me. I always feel like I’m learning and adapting. One day, I might be diving into advanced analytics techniques, and the next, exploring the potential of AI, machine learning, or RPA bots that can revolutionize our processes. But what truly excites me more than anything is the human element. Data can tell us quite a bit, but it’s the stories behind the numbers that make the real difference.

When I see how these insights can improve lives, whether it’s through more efficient social services or better-targeted healthcare, it reinforces the importance of what I do. For example, let me share the remarkable story of Dr. Virginia Apgar. She was a trailblazing physician who revolutionized neonatal care. Dr. Apgar was the first woman to become a full professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her legacy extends beyond any textbook or research paper. During a routine delivery, she noticed that newborns faced significant challenges in their first moments of life. Inspired by her observations, she developed the Apgar score, a quick assessment tool to evaluate a newborn’s overall health immediately after birth. This score, introduced in 1952, considers five vital signs: appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration. By quantifying these measures, Dr. Apgar empowered healthcare providers to quickly identify infants in distress and intervene effectively.

Dr. Apgar’s dedication to improving neonatal outcomes reminds us that behind every medical statistic lies a tiny, vulnerable life—a beating heart. Her story underscores the importance of the human element in medicine and every aspect of data. It’s not just about the data; it’s about the human lives we impact, and the stories we write with our compassion and expertise. Her legacy is a reminder of why I do what I do each day.”

When Dr. Joe was asked how strategy and data play a key role in any organization rule can scale, he further explained, “Strategy and data work hand in hand. Imagine driving blindfolded through a complex, ever-changing landscape. In this scenario, data is your high-resolution map, revealing every contour and obstacle, while strategy is your sophisticated GPS guiding you towards your destination. Without these two tools working together, you’d be navigating in the dark, risking costly detours, missed opportunities, and potential crashes.

That’s exactly what I strive to do every day—with passion, compassion, humor, and style.” To explain the significance of digital platforms in any business group Joe continued, “Digital platforms should no longer be an afterthought. They have evolved from being just tools to becoming the very ecosystem in which modern businesses thrive. While some might view them as mere virtual shop windows, they are entire marketplaces, community hubs, and innovation laboratories rolled into one. Their significance lies in their ability to fundamentally transform how businesses operate, connect, and grow. Digital platforms democratize access to global markets, leveling the playing field and allowing even small businesses to compete on a global stage. This expanded reach extends beyond potential sales to tapping into diverse talent pools, forming strategic partnerships, and gaining exposure to cutting-edge ideas from around the world. But the true power of digital platforms lies in their ability to generate and harness data. Every click, interaction, and transaction leaves a digital footprint. When analyzed intelligently, this data offers unprecedented insights into market trends, customer behavior, and emerging opportunities, allowing businesses to not only meet current customer needs but also anticipate future demands. Furthermore, digital platforms enable a level of customer engagement that was unimaginable during the analog era. They allow businesses to create tailored experiences, fostering deeper connections with their audience. They provide fertile ground for experimentation, allowing businesses to test new ideas, pivot quickly based on feedback, and iterate at once unthinkable speeds. This agility is crucial in today’s fast-paced business environment, where the ability to adapt can make the difference between obsolescence and industry leadership.” As per Joe, “In essence, digital platforms are not just significant; they are transformative. They are rewriting the rules of business, creating new possibilities for growth, engagement, and innovation. In this digital age, embracing these platforms goes beyond staying competitive; it enables businesses to unlock their full potential and redefine the boundaries of prosperity. In this digital age, platforms aren’t just tools; they are the new bedrock of business and organizational revolution. Those who master them won’t just survive—they’ll thrive, redefine their industries, and shape the future of commerce itself.
